What are “detoxes” and “cleanses”?

A variety of “detoxification” diets, regimens, and therapies—sometimes called “detoxes” or “cleanses”—have been suggested as ways to remove toxins from our body, lose weight, or promote health.

“Detoxification” programs may involve a single process or a variety of approaches. These include:

  • Fasting

  • Drinking only juices or similar beverages

  • Eating only certain foods

  • Using dietary supplements or other commercial products

  • Using herbs

  • Cleansing the colon (lower intestinal tract) with enemas, laxatives, or colon hydrotherapy (also called “colonic irrigation” or “colonics”)

  • Reducing environmental exposures.

Here are some reasons why detoxification is important:

  • Protects from disease

Detoxification can help protect you from disease.

  • Improves weight loss

If your body is holding onto toxins, you may not be effectively losing weight.

  • Improves breath

Detoxification can clear out toxins in your colon and get your digestive system functioning well again, which may improve your breath.

  • Helps with liver and kidney disease

Detoxification can be helpful for people with liver or kidney disease or damage.

Recipes for Detox Drinks:

1 Tomato detox drink

Lemon is a fruit with diuretic properties that help with weight loss. Each cup contains 250 mL of this juice and contains about 30 calories.

Ingredients:

  • 150 ml of natural, premade tomato juice

  • 25 ml of lemon juice

  • Mineral water

How to prepare:

Mix the ingredients in a cup and drink on ice. Because this drink contains vitamin C, it can be stored in a sealed container and placed in the refrigerator for up to 6 hours.

2 Watermelon and ginger juice

Watermelon is rich in water and flaxseed is rich in fiber. Together, these can help with bloating and appetite control. Each 250 mL serving contains about 130 calories.

Ingredients:

  • 2 slices of seedless watermelon

  • 1 teaspoon of ground flaxseeds

  • 1 teaspoon of fresh, grated ginger

How to prepare:

Mix all the ingredients in a blender until well-combined, strain and drink without sweetening. This detox drink can be stored in a well-sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 6 hours.

3 Amla shots drink:

Turmeric, amla, ginger, pepper and honey - a juice that helps to build immunity. Have it as shots which makes a great immunity builder.

Ingredients:

250 fresh turmeric

200 grams fresh amla

100 grams fresh ginger

Honey and pepper to taste - added last

How to prepare:

Grate and then blend in water and strain.

After every strain - blend the mixture again with more water and strain. Do this 3 to 4 times. You get approximately 1 liter of juice which you can store in the refrigerator for a week. Juice is diluted and hence can be had just like that in small shot glasses.
